There is also heavy opposition to US nuclear weapons being stationed on the continent

With the Trump administration shaking European confidence in America’s willingness to defend Europe from attack, one question that is arising is whether European countries should seek to develop their own independent nuclear deterrents.

However, a new YouGov EuroTrack survey finds that there is limited appetite for acquiring nuclear weapons in Western European countries that don’t already have them. Only 28-37% of Danes, Germans, Italians, Spaniards and Swedes support doing creating their own nuclear programs.

By contrast, most people France and Britain, which already have their own nuclear arsenals, support keeping them, at 64% in the former and 55% in the latter.

Far less appealing to Western Europeans is allowing American nuclear weapons to be stationed in their countries, with only 19-29% approving of doing so, including in Italy and Germany, which already host US nuclear arms.
