Two thirds of young Britons back recognition

With Keir Starmer expected to make an announcement soon that the UK will recognise a Palestinian state, new YouGov data shows that public support for such a move continues to significantly outweigh opposition.

The survey, conducted on 17-18 September, finds that 44% say that the UK government should recognise Palestine as an independent state, while only 18% disagree – with 37% unsure.

These figures represent a limited swing away from recognition since June last year, at which point 47% of Britons supported statehood while 12% opposed. A more recent poll in July of this year put the figures at 45% and 14% respectively.

Support is especially high among Green (68%), Labour (62%) and Lib Dem voters (60%).

Tory voters tend to oppose recognising Palestinian statehood by 34% to 26%, with Reform UK voters more emphatically doing so by 45% to 17%.

While there is greater support for recognition than not among all age groups, this ranges from two thirds of 18-24 year olds (65%) to roughly half of 25-49 year olds (47%) and 37-39% among the over-50 age groups.
