British football fans are predicting a close competition between Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United for this year’s UEFA Champions League title, our survey reveals. The group stage of the tournament is set to kick off at 7.45pm tonight, when British teams Manchester United and Rangers go head to head while Tottenham Hotspur meet Werder Bremen.

With 23% of fans predicting an overall victory for Barcelona, 22% for Chelsea and 20% for Manchester United, the competition to remove the title from defending champions Inter Milan appears too close to call. Real Madrid (9%), Arsenal (8%), Tottenham Hotspur (2%) or AC Milan (2%) are seen as outsiders for the title.

When it comes to British teams, 46% of Brits, who are interested in football, think Chelsea will be the team to get furthest, compared to one third (31%) who predict Manchester United and 13% who say Arsenal. Just 2% said for Tottenham Hotspur, who will be embarking on their first campaign in the Champions League.

The final will be held at Wembley Stadium, London, on 28th May 2011.
