Coronation Street, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has topped our first annual YouGov Awards poll as the nation’s favourite soap opera of 2010, while its much talked-about plotline which saw a tram crash into the street below (pictured) has won Best Soap Plot. The Street failed to bag the gong for Best TV show, however, with that special honour going to ITV period drama Downton Abbey.

  • 46% voted Coronation Street their favourite TV soap, while Eastenders came in second place on 21%
  • 41% rated Coronation Street’s ‘tram crash’ as their favourite soap plotline, compared to Jack Duckworth’s death in the same soap on 10%.
  • Emmerdale’s ‘Arron coming out as gay’ and ‘Kat and Alfie returning’ in Eastenders came in at joint third place on 8%.
  • When it comes to the best show on TV this year, though, ITV’s Downton Abbey was rated the most popular, with 17% of the votes, followed by BBC’s The Apprentice on 11% and Doctor Who, Have I Got News For You and X Factor on joint third with 10%.
