Half (50%) of Scottish people believe that the Unite union was wrong to resist the conditions offered to its members at the Grangemouth petrochemical plant, a recent YouGov poll shows.
The research finds that a third (33%) believe the union took the right position, while 17% don’t know.
YouGov found that nine in ten (92%) of Conservative supporters believe Unite’s position was wrong, compared to just under four in ten (38%) Labour backers. Half (50%) of both Liberal Democrats and SNP voters also disagreed with the union’s position.
Six in ten (61%) Scots think that the workers should have accepted conditions such as cuts in pay in order to keep the plant open and retain their jobs. One in five (19%) think that the workers should have accepted the conditions, while 20% don’t know.
