Europeans would welcome an independent Scotland into the EU

A recent YouGov survey explored public attitudes on the continent to the UK rejoining the European Union, including whether Europeans would be willing to let Britain retain possession of its previous opt-outs on e.g. the Euro and Schengen area membership.

With Keir Starmer ruling out a ‘Breturn’ for the foreseeable future, the reality may be that by the time the situation in Westminster allows for a return to the EU, it may no longer be a “United Kingdom” that does so.

That Scotland may vote in a second independence referendum to leave the UK cannot be discounted, and Scottish nationalists have long expressed their desire for an independent Scotland to join the EU.

In the event that Scotland came asking, they would be welcomed by most Europeans – across the five continental countries the latest YouGov EuroTrack survey asked, the majority in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Spain (63-75%) say they would support an independent Scotland joining the EU.

Even in Britain, where Scottish independence is opposed in the wider country, more Britons think that a Scottish breakaway state should be allowed to join the EU (46%) than should not (32%).
