Britons are most likely to think car washes and nail bars should have stricter immigration enforcement
The government recently outlined its immigration measures, with plans such as tightening rules around some work visas and reducing net migration.
New YouGov research examines whether the public think immigration enforcement is sufficiently strict within a range of different sectors.
Of the 15 areas we asked about, Britons are most likely to say there should be stricter immigration enforcement in the nail bar (55%), car wash (53%), beauty salon (51%) and food delivery (50%) industries.
Meanwhile, a further third of Britons think immigration enforcement should be looser for those working as doctors (30%) and nurses (33%).
For all industries bar one (university students) the number of Britons wanting to see stricter enforcement has grown since July last year, with the largest increases for hotel workers (+8), food delivery (+7), and beauty salons and restaurant staff (both +6).
Those who voted Reform UK in last year’s general election are much more likely to support more stringent rules across all these occupations, ranging from 51% in nursing to 80% among nail workers, especially when compared to Labour and Liberal Democrat voters whose support varies between 13% and 51%.
Older Britons are more likely to want to see stricter enforcement across all industries, reaching as high as 72% for nail bars, and 67% for car washes and beauty salons among the over-65s. The youngest generation (18-24 year olds), by contrast, are typically divided three ways in their views.
