Public favourability of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
The most recent YouGov royal family favourability survey was conducted in early January. At that time, just 3% of Britons said they had a positive view of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the lowest figure we have recorded to date. Fully 90% of the public have an unfavourable of the former Duke of York.
Public support for actions to strip Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s honours and titles
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been progressively stripped of his honours and titles – to strong public support. Most recently, our poll this week finds that 82% of Britons support removing Andrew from the royal line of succession.
And asked in October and November last year, 80% of Britons backed the removal of his status as Duke of York, 79% supported stripping him of his title as Prince, and 76% approved of removing his military rank of Vice Admiral.
The public are more reticent to see Mountbatten-Windsor stripped of his South Atlantic Medal, which he received for serving as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands. While 36% of Britons also wish to see this campaign medal stripped from the former Prince, slightly more are opposed (43%).
What do Britons make of the royal family’s response to the issue?
Most Britons (58%) believe that the royal family have reacted too slowly to the revelations about Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, and half (51%) say senior royals should have done more to condemn the former Prince.
Most (54%) believe that daughters Eugenie and Beatrice would be right to distance themselves from their father.
When it comes to the King, most Britons think Charles III has done realistically all he can to separate the royal family from Andrew, although they are relatively split on how well he has handled the matter: 40% say he has handled the issue well, but 32% thought he had handled it badly.
Expectations that Prince Andrew will face charges
Asked prior to his arrest, only 25% of Britons thought it was likely that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor would face criminal charges for his alleged activities in relation to Jeffrey Epstein.
