Kemi Badenoch and Ed Davey battle for third place
With YouGov’s voting intention polling now having resumed following the 2024 general election, our ‘best prime minister’ poll has now also been conducted for the first time since July. The results, like those of the voting intention survey, show a close contest between Nigel Farage on 20% and Keir Starmer on 19%. Kemi Badenoch and Ed Davey have their own tussle for third place, on 9% and 8% respectively.
Just half of 2024 Labour voters (50%) say that Starmer would make the best prime minister from the list of four, although few (2-8%) opt for an alternative, with most of the rest (34%) answering “don’t know”.
Farage, by contrast, has the overwhelming support of his own voters, with 81% backing him for best PM. Again, few (0-3%) prefer one of the other offerings, with the rest (15%) unsure.
Among 2024 Conservative voters, Kemi Badenoch has the endorsement of only 32%, with more unsure of who the best candidate for No 10 is (41%), while a sizeable 24% prefer Nigel Farage.
And Ed Davey likewise performs poorly among 2024 Lib Dem voters, with only 30% saying he would make the best prime minister. This is perhaps unsurprising given that we know many Lib Dem voters last year were simply Labour voters voting tactically, and indeed 22% of Lib Dems say they think Keir Starmer would make the best prime minister.
