Most people say new allegations about David Cameron's 'debauched' behaviour at Oxford couldn't matter less (but we didn't mention the pig)
The Daily Mail featured new allegations about apparently debauched behaviour during David Cameron's time at Oxford University this morning, from Lord Ashcroft's unauthorised biography of David Cameron, Call me Dave. The claims involve David Cameron's membership of a cannabis smoking group called 'Flam' and a social society called Piers Gaveston, which David Cameron is supposed to have performed an unsavoury sexual act with a pig to gain access into.
The news has gone viral on social media, with #PigGate trending and users noticing similarities with an episode of Charlie Brooker's series Black Mirror. But new YouGov research reveals that most people in the wider British world don't care, at leasst in principle.
62% think that more allegations that David Cameron was involved in debauched behaviour during his time at Oxford couldn't matter less. Only one in four people say it's a sign of the man and a legitimate public interest story.
Downing Street has not commented on the story, and when asked about it at a press conference in China George Osborne appeared to smirk and move on to something else.
Lord Ashcroft, who donated millions of pounds to the Conservative party and was apparently promised a top job by David Cameron prior to 2010 but then offered only a minor one, has said the new book is "not about settling scores". He did admit he had personal "beef" with the prime minister, however.
