How popular are Western European leaders in their own countries?
A new YouGov Eurotrack survey conducted from 6-24 March 2025 explores the favourability of national leaders among their respective populaces in each of the seven countries covered: Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
While no leader proves to be popular overall, Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen is the least unpopular, with 45% having a favourable view of the social democrat leader, compared to 50% with an unfavourable view.
At the other end of the table is French president Emmanuel Macron, of whom only 20% have a positive view – almost three quarters (74%) have a negative opinion of Macron.
Outgoing German chancellor Olaf Scholz also scores poorly, with just a quarter of Germans liking him (26%) compared to 68% who dislike him.
Here in the UK, 32% of Britons have a favourable view of prime minister Keir Starmer, relative to 58% who see him unfavourably – these figures are almost identical to Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s own domestic ratings.
How popular is Donald Trump in Europe?
As previous surveys have shown, Donald Trump is very unpopular in Western Europe. Across our seven countries, between 69% and 94% have an unfavourable view of the US president. He is least popular in Denmark – only 5% have a positive view – perhaps unsurprisingly given his stated intentions to seize the Danish territory of Greenland.
Italians are the most likely to have a favourable view of Trump, although this still only amounts to 21%.
