Conservative voters would prefer Johnson to stay on until a new Tory leader has been elected
With Boris Johnson hoping to continue as caretaker prime minister for the next few months, Keir Starmer delivered a stern warning that this would not be acceptable for Labour and promised to call a vote of no confidence if Johnson continues to cling on.
Now new YouGov data suggests that half of Britons (53%) would support Starmer in calling a no-confidence vote should Johnson refuse to stand down immediately. Only a third (32%) are opposed.
Views are predictably divided between parties, with only a quarter of 2019 Conservative voters supporting the proposed vote of no confidence (25%), versus 85% of Labour voters who support the proposal.
Asked about Johnson’s departure date, a majority of Britons (57%) prefer that he step down with immediate effect to let someone else take over. Only 31% believe Johnson should stay on until a new leader is elected, although this does include a majority of Conservative voters, who would rather see him go later than go now by 56% to 37%.
