67% of British people support a Russia-backed Assad staying in power if that would mean striking a major blow to ISIS

According to western sources Russia has started a military build-up in Syria. Moscow is sending arms, plains and personnel to back embattled president Assad in the fight against ISIS. As tensions between Moscow and the West are high due to the conflict in Ukraine, western countries are weary of further Russian involvement in the Syrian conflict.

A new YouGov Daily poll find that 67% of British support a Russia-backed Assad staying in power if that would mean defeating ISIS. The research showed that 14% are against this with just under one in five opting for some “other” option.

An earlier poll run by YouGov Daily showed that 41% of the public disapproved of Russia getting more involved in Syria.

On Friday, US and Russian defence chiefs spoke for the first time since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in the beginning of 2014. According to the Pentagon, the call lasted 50 minutes and included an agreement for further US-Russian talks on hot topics. The key topic was Syria as it is assumed the former Cold War foes are aiming for a coordinated approach to the challenges in that country. Ever since civil war broke out in Syria Russia has supported the regime of Bashar al Assad.
