John Major, William Hague and Paddy Ashdown are the most respected party heavyweights on our list

The election campaign has just been given an injection of gravitas with a parade of party elder statesmen. Which are most useful to their campaigns? We ran a YouGov poll for Red Box to find out.

The question we posed was: "How much, if at all, do you respect the following people?" As our league table shows, John Major, William Hague and Paddy Ashdown do well on the total respect measure, while Peter Mandelson comes bottom.

How much, if at all, do you respect the following people?
Respect them a lot or a fair amount
    %
  William Hague 39
  John Major 39
  Paddy Ashdown 37
  Gordon Brown 33
  Alistair Darling 29
  Neil Kinnock 27
  Tony Blair 24
  David Owen 24
  Michael Howard 19
  Peter Mandelson 10

John Major also came off well when we asked in February which grandees would be an asset or a liability during the election campaign.
