New data drawn from YouGov’s Social media: bringing people together? report indicates that over a third (36%) of daily social media users say they feel lonely very or quite often. This is opposed to the 61% of daily users that say they do not feel lonely very often.
Of those that are not a member of any social media platform, a quarter say they feel lonely very or quite often. Seven in ten (70%) say feel lonely not very often or never.
The report also analysed which social media platforms’ users are the loneliest. The data showed that Tumblr users (56%) are most likely to say they feel lonely very, or quite, often.
LinkedIn users are least likely to be lonely, with just 36% of its platform members reporting feelings of loneliness.
Increasingly, there is a debate around some of the negative aspects of social media, and the impact the platforms can have on personal well-being.
Certainly, those frequently using social media will regularly see their friends and peers enjoying what is portrayed as fun, picturesque and perfect lives, and this can have a knock-on effect – provoking feelings of loneliness.
