The people’s England XI

England fans back a front three of Kane, Vardy and Rooney against Russia, as Tottenham’s young stars get the nod.

England get their Euro 2016 campaign underway tomorrow evening as they take on Russia in Marseille. During an unpredictable Premier League season, a group of young English players have forged their way into the England squad to make it the youngest at the tournament and there has been pressure on Roy Hodgson to pick the Tottenham and Leicester stars that lit up the Premier League this year.

We asked English football fans to pick their eleven to face Russia and found they favour the exact team that started the final friendly game against Portugal.

English fans are in favour of playing all three of Rooney (54%), Vardy (59%), and Kane (68%) against the Russians, a set up that drew criticism when tested against Portugal on Friday. Elsewhere, Tottenham players make up 5 of the first team and James Milner (43%) narrowly beats Jack Wilshere (40%) for the 4th midfield spot. Joe Hart is the most popular player, with 79% of fans supporting his inclusion.

Germany favourites across Europe

We also asked football fans in 5 countries competing in this year’s tournament for their predictions for the tournament. Germany are favoured to win this year’s tournament in every country except France where they narrowly back their home team by a margin of 29% to Germany’s 26%. Spain are third favourites across the board, being back by between 12% and 18% in each country polled.

Unsurprisingly, an English victory is considered most likely by England fans (10%). Meanwhile in Wales 7% think Gareth Bale and his team mates will bring home the Henri Delaunay Trophy.
