Britons are split 28% to 28% on who would make the better prime minister
YouGov’s favourability ratings last month showed that Nigel Farage is the most popular, or least unpopular, politician in the country, with many attributing this to his ability to seem authentic. Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner has been viewed as Labour’s potential answer to this, with even Farage himself complimenting that “at least she’s real”.
But how Rayner would fare against Farage if she became leader is less clear, with the public evenly split 28% to 28% on which of the two would make the better prime minister.
This divide contrasts with Keir Starmer enjoying a 15pt lead over Farage on the same question, with Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative voters all more likely to say they are ‘not sure’ when faced with Rayner versus Farage than when faced with Starmer versus Farage.
While it is the case that more Britons ‘don’t know’ how they feel about Rayner (28%) than about Farage or Starmer (9%) in our favourability polling, this can’t be the sole explanation for the tighter race. A similar 28% of Britons don’t know about Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, and she beats Farage in a head-to-head by 4 points, while 41% are unsure about Lib Dem leader Ed Davey, who beats Farage by 14 points.
