Sadiq Khan makes bright start as London Mayor

After two months as London Mayor Sadiq Khan remains popular in London, as Boris’s approval in the capital takes a post-Brexit hit.

If a week is a long time in politics, then the two months since Sadiq Khan took over from Boris Johnson as mayor of London on the 5thof May now feels like a lifetime. In the political turbulence since, Boris Johnson has helped to lead the UK out of the EU and become the favourite to be Prime Minister, before aborting his bid at the last minute.

Meanwhile, as he settles into his role as Mayor, Sadiq Khan may have emerged as a figure of stability for an also turbulent Labour Party – at least in London.

YouGov’s first poll of Londoners since the London elections in May shows that Sadiq Khan has made a popular start to his life as Mayor. Three times as many think he is doing very or fairly well (45%) as think he is doing very or fairly badly (15%) - a net rating of +30. Boris Johnson ended his time as mayor with a net rating of +23.

However, Boris’s popularity appears to have taken a hit since leading the campaign for Brexit. 29% of Londoners say they have a less favourable opinion of Boris since the campaign. Only around one in ten (9%) have a more favourable view. A further 15% had a favourable view of him before the campaign and still do now, and 36% had an unfavourable view that remains unchanged.

Worryingly for any lingering Boris leadership ambitions, Conservative voters in London (37%) are the most likely to have a less favourable view of him since the campaign.
