Samantha Cameron has said that her husband should serve another full five years if he wins the election. But does the public agree?
In a new YouGov poll for Red Box, we first asked about the other possibility: "If the Conservatives lose the next election and there is a Labour government, do you think David Cameron should remain as Conservative leader or should he resign?"
The public is nearly exactly split, with 37% saying he should stay and 38% saying he should resign (but with 69% of Conservative voters wanting him to stay.) We then asked: "And if the Conservatives win the next election and form a Conservative government, do you think David Cameron should serve a full five-year term as prime minister or should he stand down part way through the parliament and let someone else take over as Conservative leader and prime minister?"
50% agree with Mrs Cameron, that he should serve the full term, with only 25% saying he should step down part way through. Both of these results are significantly stronger for the prime minister than when we asked the same questions last August (when the splits were 29-44 and 46-28 respectively), showing that his stature has grown over the past seven months.
