The exact meaning of the word has prompted significant debate
The word “staycation” has become popular during the pandemic, with many Brits choosing to holiday in and around the UK and their local area. However, the increased use of the word has led to a public debate over whether it means a holiday spent at home, or a holiday in one’s own country.
Even the dictionaries are divided. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a staycation is “a holiday that you take at home or near your home rather than travelling to another place”. However, the Oxford Dictionary defines it as “a holiday spent at home or in one’s country of residence”.
Most Britons (72%) think that any holiday within the UK is a staycation, while 21% think it means only holidaying from your own home rather than travelling elsewhere.
While a majority of all age groups think the term applies to holidaying the UK as a whole, adults aged between 18 and 24 are the most likely to think it only applies to holidays based at home (26%) compared to 16% of the over 65s.
