Ten out of twelve of the UK’s water companies are still sometimes using dowsing to detect leaks or find water pipes, alongside other methods. Dowsing is a technique for searching for underground water by observing the motion of a rod (called a “dowsing rod” or a “divining rod”) supposedly in response to unseen influences.
