Minecraft was commemorated by YouTube last month for the milestone of generating a trillion views on the platform. The sandbox game’s influence is no longer limited to just the gaming community; a sizeable chunk of those views have come on non-gameplay videos that simply adopted stylistic elements from the game.
Needless to say, Minecraft remains popular as a video game across the world. According to reports from August 2021, Minecraft has 141 million active players.
In this piece, we look at the shares of consumers in four key gaming markets – the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France – that played the title in the last month, using the Current Customer metric from YouGov BrandIndex.
Topping the list is the US where about one in 17 consumers (6%) reported playing a Minecraft title in the past month.
The game also enjoys a strong userbase in France, where one in 25 consumers (4%) played Minecraft over the same period. In the UK and Germany, about 3% of players said they played the game.
Minecraft was originally developed in 2009 and has grown in popularity over the years. The game keeps players engaged by releasing add-ons annually and is even set to enjoy a movie premiere this year, in the form of Minecraft: The Movie, scheduled for release in March.

Methodology: YouGov BrandIndex collects data on thousands of brands every day. Minecraft Current Customer score is based on the question: “Have you played any of the following video games in the last 30 days?” and delivered as a percentage. Scores are based on an average daily sample size of 2,248 consumers in Germany, 1021 consumers in France, 3,081 consumers in the United Kingdom and 1,420 consumers in the United States between December 3, 2021 and January 2, 2022.
