The messaging company has also donated $1 million to the International Fact-Checking Network.
WhatsApp has put new limits on forwarding messages to stop the spread of misinformation related to the coronavirus pandemic. Messages identified as “highly forwarded”, which have gone through a chain of five or more people, can be forwarded only to one person.
Several news organisations last month found that WhatsApp had been used to share false information on COVID-19. In response, the social messaging company deployed a bot which provided coronavirus related information vetted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The prime minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar has also urged users to stop forwarding unverified information on their WhatsApp groups. The Facebook-owned messaging company said, “it’s important to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.”
