13.3 million UK households are now subscribed to some popular TV streaming platform

An Ofcom report revealed that subscriptions for TV streaming platforms in UK grew by 19% to reach 13.3 million homes in 2019. Given that most homes have signed up for more than one service, the total number of subscriptions in the country is now 19.1 million.

Traditional TV viewing has declined to 11 minutes in 2018. But, a Thinkbox spokesman notes that UK broadcasters are “rapidly growing streaming services themselves” and still “account for the vast majority of video viewing.”

Such broadcaster behaviour is evident in BBC and ITV’s partnership, wherein, they’ve teamed up to launch a streaming service later this year called “Britbox”. However, 38% of UK adults subscribed to a streaming service said that they don’t see themselves watching broadcast TV in five years.
