A plurality of Brits plan to eat pancakes today, and a lemon and sugar combo is the public’s favourite filling

Today is Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Pancake Day, and to mark the occasion a plurality of Brits (45%) say they will be eating pancakes. Almost three in ten (29%) people think they might indulge in pancake eating, compared to 25% who say they will not.

Our poll reveals that Brits prefer sweet pancakes to savoury, with lemon and sugar being the most popular pancake topping/filling by far. Maple syrup and golden syrup trail in second and third place, respectively, and ice cream and chocolate spread, such as Nutella, tie for fourth place.

  • Over six in ten (62%) people favour sweet pancakes, while 9% prefer savoury fillings and almost a quarter (23%) like both equally
  • 63% of Brits say lemon and sugar is their favourite pancake filling, compared to 22% who say maple syrup is the best and one in seven (14%) who favour golden syrup
  • In contrast, 12% of Brits prefer either ice cream or chocolate spread as their favourite pancake topping

A pantastic day

Half (50%) of the people who will be eating pancakes today say they will have between three and five, with a third (33%) of Brits holding back to two pancakes.

In comparison, just over one in ten (11%) men plan to have between six and eight pancakes, while almost one in twenty (4%) women say they will feast on nine or ten pancakes today.
