Tony Curtis: 'a towering talent’

Following the death this week of acting legend Tony Curtis, fans have been moved to pay homage to the star on our TellYouGov leaderboard in response, pushing his volume score up to 149 points.

  • Comments, or ‘tygs’, have been flooding in to pay tribute to the actor, pushing his volume score up an impressive 144 points in 24 hours to reach a total of 164
  • And tygs are nearly all positive, leading to a sentiment score of 119, up 98 points in the same timeframe, making the actor the most positive topic on the entire board.

  • Several TellYouGov users or ‘tyggers’ have lamented that Tony Curtis, whose real name was Bernard Schwartz, ‘will be sadly missed’.
  • While many praised what a ‘superb’ and ‘great’ actor he was; one tygger called him a ‘towering talent’ while another hailed him as a ‘splendid comic’.

There was a sense on the leaderboard that Curtis’s death marked the end of an era.

  • One user said ‘another of the giants of entertainment passes away’, a sentiment which was echoed by another tygger who said his death was the ‘end of a legend and a cinematic era’.
  • The film for which Curtis is perhaps most famous, Some Like It Hot, also starring Marilyn Monroe, inevitably got a mention, with one user implying that such a classic was ‘unrepeatable’, making reference to its arguably unparalleled place in the history of film.

Oscar-nominated

Tony Curtis died of cardiac arrest, aged 85, at his home in Nevada on September 29th 2010. Curtis has starred in a prolific amount of films, including big hits such as Some Like It Hot (1959) and Spartacus (1960), and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in The Defiant Ones (1958). The actor is perhaps just as famous for his personal life, having been married six times, and is father to six children including actress Jamie Lee Curtis.

The actress issued a public statement saying: ‘My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages. He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed.’
