You and an accomplice have been arrested for committing a crime. The police are keeping you in separate cells with no ability to communicate with each other. You both face a choice: either testify against the other or stay silent. If you testify and they stay silent, you go free and your accomplice gets 3 years in prison. Likewise, if your accomplice testifies against you and you stay silent, they go free and you get a 3 year sentence. If you both testify against one another, you both get 2 years in jail.
