Men are three times as likely as women not to have started Christmas shopping yet

With less than a fortnight to go until Christmas Day, around three in ten Britons (28%) have bought all of the presents they need to.

YouGov has been tracking the progress of gift-gathering in the run-up to Christmas. At the beginning of the month 74% of Britons had begun their festive shopping – and 17% had already finished.

Now, the Christmas shopping tracker reveals that eight in ten people (81%) have at least started buying gifts, including 35% who have bought “most” of their presents and 18% who have bought “some”; 9% don't intend to buy any Christmas presents this year and 2% say they don’t know.

However, 8% of Britons are yet to buy a single gift they need – and men are lagging behind women considerably in the present-buying stakes.

Men are three times as likely as women not to have started their Christmas shopping yet – 12% of men say they haven’t bought any of the gifts they need, compared to 4% of women.

In contrast, a third of women have bought all of their presents (33%), compared to 22% of men.

Younger people are least likely to have started – or finished – their Christmas shopping

According to YouGov’s Christmas shopping tracker, older people are more prepared for the festivities than the younger generations.

Between 7% and 8% of those in age groups 25 and over are yet to have bought a gift, compared to 14% of 18 to 24-year-olds.

Those aged 65 and over are most likely to have finished their present buying (36%) and are twice as likely to have done so as those aged 18 to 24 (17%).

They were also quickest off the mark with their shopping – a quarter of 65 and overs (25%) had finished their present buying by 5 December.

In comparison, on the same date, 18% of 50 to 64-year-olds, 12% of 25 to 49-year-olds and 14% of 18 to 24-year-olds had bought all of the gifts they intended to.

And by December 5, 15% of men and 18% of women said they had purchased all of the Christmas presents they needed.

Present buying progress has been steady

Progress has been steady among Christmas shoppers so far this year, with the proportion of Britons having started their shopping growing from 74% on 5 December to 77% on 9 December and 81% on 12 December.
