Voters in Eastleigh will select an MP to replace Chris Huhne of the Liberal Democrats. The Times outlines the uncommon importance of the Eastleigh by-election:
"Eastleigh really matters…As the junior partner in the Government, the days when [the Liberal Democrats] could hope to benefit from being the repository for protest votes are gone. As a consequence, their only hope of salvaging a decent electoral performance is to hang on to seats in which they are already embedded(...)"
