As the Conservatives split on gay marriage, 71% of the public think the party is divided
Seven in ten (71%) people think the Conservative Party is divided and just one in ten (10%) believe it is united, a YouGov poll for The Sun shows. The figures come as the Tories last night divided over legislation to introduce gay marriage to the UK: 136 Conservative MPs opposed the bill and 127 voted in favour.
A majority (54%) of Britons support gay marriage, although a sizable minority (38%) oppose it. However, given the way the Tories broke apart on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill the public is divided over the legislation’s future. Although a plurality (46%) believe that David Cameron should press on despite over 100 Tory MPs opposing the measure, four in ten (41%) think the Prime Minister should not continue with the passage of the bill.
