Over a quarter of Britons would back time slots for entry at popular tourist destinations, new research from YouGov reveals.
YouGov’s live question explored the issue of ‘overtourism’, and asked which of four options would best deter travellers in order to combat the problem. The problem of overtourism has become a major issue for the travel industry in recent years, with many popular destinations and local authorities struggling to cope with the pressure of too many visitors.
Over a quarter (27%) thought that time slots for entry would be the best option. The second most popular option is the creation of an app that shows tourist how many other people are currently at the location.
Elsewhere, 14% believe that the best tactic would be to close off the tourist spot for a period of time. The same amount (14%) say there should be an extra tax on visiting the attraction. A quarter (25%) said they didn’t know.
Unsurprisingly, those aged 18-24 are more likely to favour the creation of an app that those in other age groups, with 23% backing this option against 15% of those 65 and over. By contrast, those in the eldest age group are most likely to say an extra tax in the best idea (17% vs. 12% of those aged 18-24).
