Folk-rock band Mumford and Sons, originally from West London, has soared up the TellYouGov leaderboard in the past few weeks, perhaps due to its highly-acclaimed performance at Glastonbury Festival, the release of the single Roll Away Your Stone (the fourth release from the debut album Sigh No More) last month, and the anticipated performances at this summer’s Leeds Festival and Camp Bestival on the Isle of Wight.

The group, formed in late 2007, whose music has been described as a mix of country, bluegrass and folk, has seen its volume increase on the TellYouGov leaderboard by eight points in the past week, resulting in a total volume score of 49. The band’s sentiment score has also reached 49, inflated by a recent boost of 20 points. Comments, or ‘tygs’, have accordingly been overwhelmingly positive, with users, or ‘tyggers’ calling the group ‘lyrically and musically amazing’ and ‘ingeniously inventive’.

Festival feeling

The band’s performances at gigs and festivals have also been well-received, with one tygger enthusiastically acclaiming the band’s ‘wonderful live performances’ and another praising them for an ‘excellent live gig at Glastonbury’, saying there was ‘much love in the crowd for them’. The band has also been commended for its originality – one tygger claimed ‘no one else sounds like [it]’, another called it‘something different’ and one wrote ‘the world needs more electric banjos’, referring to the group’s unusual instrument of choice.

Some tygs have been particularly pleased with the band’s summery folk-ish sound, with a number of tyggers hailing ‘the return of folk to the British music scene’: one wrote ‘good to see British folk on the rise’ and another saying the ‘folk revival is very welcome’. Others focused on the band’s upbeat music, with one tygger calling Mumford and Sons’ songs ‘happy summer tunes’ and another saying that it is ‘music to tap your feet to’.

Not all tygs were unanimously positive, however, with some slightly less enthusiastic tyggers saying ‘I just don’t get it’ and another lamenting that ‘all their songs sound the same’. But negative comments are few and far between – one tygger captured the general mood with an emphatic ‘best album I have heard in years’, while another simply said ‘their music makes me happy’.
With the weather set to stay largely dry and performances coming up left, right and centre for the group, it looks like the summery style of Mumford and Sons will be around in force on the TellYouGov leaderboard for some time yet.
