With the emergency budget expected imminently, the recently instated Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, has climbed up the TellYouGov leaderboard on volume scores, although largely negative ‘tygs’ have netted him an overall poor sentiment score in recent days.

The topic ‘George Osborne’ currently stands at a high volume of 193, reflecting an 89 point increase in the last 24 hours, undoubtedly due to increasing speculation around today’s announcement of the budget and the expected spending cuts and tax rises that look sure to follow. However, his sentiment score, which measures positive or negative opinion, is -28, mainly thanks to a decrease of 14 points in the past few days.

And it seems there are clear divisions among the TellYouGov community. One tygger has accused Osborne of ‘making budget cuts driven by ideology, not financial necessity’ as others focus on his relatively privileged position, with one saying ‘public sector cuts won’t affect him’.

However, others disagreed and wrote positive tygs, with one saying [Osborne] is ‘absolutely right to deal with the deficit now’ and another writing that his actions will ‘deal with Labour’s economic lies’.

And despite the large amount of negative tygs about the new Chancellor, one tygger even went as far as to exclaim that ‘he’s got more Balls than Ed’.
