Optimism despite draw with USA

The majority (85%) of English football fans believe that England will reach the quarter finals or beyond in the 2010 football World Cup, YouGov research on behalf of the Sun newspaper has found.

39% of those who described themselves as interested in the World Cup think England will reach the quarter finals and a substantial 34% think England will reach the semi-finals. 12% think England will go even further, with 6% believing England will reach the final the other 6% thinking England will actually win the tournament. However, amongst all this optimism, 2% think England won’t even get out of their group, which includes the USA, Algeria and Slovenia, and 11% believe they will only get as far as the second round.

However when it comes to deciding the best football team in the world, Spain gets the nod from football fans. 35% of those who said that they are interested in football think Spain are currently the best football team in the world, while a quarter favour Brazil. England fans may be pleased to know that England received the third highest number of votes with 13%, in front of Argentina (4%), Italy (3%), Germany (1%) and France (1%).
