Yeezy is very unpopular in the UK

American rapper Kanye West has been causing controversy for some years now with his remarks and behaviour, including causing consternation during several public outings with his wife Bianca Censori (more of which below) and proclaiming himself to “love Hitler” in a post on X earlier this month, the latest in a series of remarks expressing pro-Nazi sentiment and negativity towards Jews.

A new YouGov survey shows that the rapper – also known as Ye and Yeezy – is very unpopular in the UK, with a mere 5% of Britons saying they have a favourable opinion of the artist. More than two thirds (69%) say they have a negative opinion of Kanye West, including 49% with a “very negative” opinion. Only 9% say they have never heard of him, while 17% answered “don’t know”.

Of notable concern have been public appearances of the artist and his wife Bianca Censori, particularly a recent appearance at the Grammys red carpet at which Censori appeared in a completely transparent dress with nothing underneath. West posted on X after the event “I have dominion over my wife”, and fears have been expressed that the rapper may be exercising coercive control over his wife.

Our survey shows that, of those Britons familiar with who Kanye West is, two thirds (65%) say that they have heard at least a little about his relationship with Bianca Censori.

It is a relationship that does not look good from the outside. Of those who have heard anything about the relationship, 70% say it appears to be an unhealthy one, rising to 76% among women. A mere 2% of those who say they have any awareness of the relationship regard it as a healthy partnership. Rumours are circulating that the couple are heading for divorce, although a representative for the couple has denied such claims.

Few of those who know some details of the relationship believe that Censori is equally as invested in these stunts as West, with just 12% saying seeing such activities as something they both equally want to do.

Of the red carpet event specifically, Kanye has said: “People say the red carpet look was her decision… Yes, I don’t make her do nothing she doesn’t want to, but she definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it without my approval, you stupid ass woke pawns.”

Nevertheless, 53% get the impression that Kanye wants to do them more than Bianca – only 3% think that she is the driving force behind the controversies.

Women who are familiar with the West-Censori relationship are more likely to think that Kanye is the more willing participant in the stunts than men do (60% vs 46%).
