Toyota is now perceived as better than Volkswagen for quality - even in Germany
New figures released by Toyota yesterday confirm that it sold more cars than Volkswagen in the first nine months of 2015, making it the largest car maufacturer in the world. Toyota reported sales of 7.5 million cars in the first three quarters of 2014, compared to 7.43 million of Volkswagen and 7.2 million sold by General Motors.
Data from YouGov Brandindex reveals that even in its native Germany, Volkswagen's reputation is now behind Toyota on the measure of quality.
The difference between the three countries is striking: whilst in Germany Volkswagen had been considered miles ahead of Toyota for quality up until the recent scandal, in the United States Toyota was already ahead on this measure.
The challenge for Volkswagen is how it goes about restoring its brand across the world. We'll be checking in regularly with YouGov Brandindex to see how it fares.
