The decision comes amidst an ongoing antitrust investigation initiated by UK’s competition regulator, Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Google has said the company would offer to appoint a CMA-approved independent Monitoring Trustee to improve provisions around reporting and compliance. Google will also provide extensive testing commitments and a more transparent approach to taking market feedback on the company’s Privacy Sandbox Initiative.
The period of active oversight by the CMA has also been increased from five to six years from the date of any decision to accept Google’s modified commitments. The regulatory body will now consult on the revised set of obligations to gather fresh feedback by 17th December this year.
The company’s alternative ad-targeting technologies had run into objections from certain advertisers and publishers, who claimed Google’s update would increase the company’s market power. This had then moved the CMA to open an antitrust investigation in January this year.
