The company spends more than 1 billion euros a year on nearly 920,000 tons of packaging.
The newest line of Ikea bulbs are now being packaged in paper cartons instead of plastic, as the company plans to eliminate plastic packaging entirely, gradually. With the exception of select food products for safety reasons and to avoid food waste, Ikea has pledged to completely remove plastic packaging by 2025 for its new products.
Moreover, as Ikea works toward its goal of becoming a fully "circular" enterprise, all existing products will be packaged plastic-free by 2028. The majority of new packaging will use paper, with the company considering other alternatives as well.
Only around 10% of Ikea’s current packaging is plastic. Maja Kjellberg, packaging innovation leader at Ikea, notes, “We’re not limiting ourselves to paper. We do want to use other materials going forward”.
