Unlikely big winners emerged from the ashes of Facebook outage

Facebook, along with its sister apps Instagram and WhatsApp, faced a six-hour-long global outage on Monday. 

Facebook’s outage on Monday not only crippled all of its platforms but also sent the company into the biggest technological crisis in its history. While this outage was a nightmare for the social giant, it was like a blessing to its competitors. Telegram, Snapchat, Twitter and Signal were among the social platforms that benefited from the Facebook outage.

The messaging app Telegram – a competitor to WhatsApp and Facebook – gained over 70 million new users on Monday. The average time spent on Telegram also grew 18% over the week. In contrast, the time for WhatsApp and Messenger fell 25% and 20%, respectively, over the week. Similarly, the secure messaging app Signal usage grew 15% week-over-week.

Snapchat’s usage grew by 23% week-over-week, while Twitter’s usage grew 11% week-over-week. But, TikTok witnessed a modest 2% growth week-over-week. These numbers are based on a report by Sensor Tower, which used a sample of 100,000 random Android users who were active on various platforms each day.
