The Australian government announced that it would amend its controversial News Media Bargaining Code.
Facebook has also signed a deal with the Australian government, allowing the news content to return to its platform. Australian Facebook users and Pages will also have the ability to share news links restored in the coming days.
The amendments in the News Code are expected to clarify the operational procedures digital platforms and news media need to follow. It would further highlight how the code is intended to strengthen the framework for ensuring news media businesses are accurately remunerated.
Facebook’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand, William Easton, said, We’re pleased that we’ve been able to reach an agreement with the Australian government…” Easton further added that this deal would enable them to restore news on Facebook for Australians shortly.
