The Showcase will eventually include India, Netherlands and Belgium.
Google News Showcase looks to help publishers surface news to searchers. It also aims to help content searchers looking for information on Google Discover and Search.
The roll out will first be to Android devices followed by Google News on iOS and Google Discover and Search. Partnerships for News Showcase have been signed with around 200 publications across UK, Australia, Germany, Canada, Brazil and Argentina.
This will build on the existing news licensing program and Google plans to make $1 billion available to publishers in licensing fees to “create and curate high-quality content for a different kind of online news experience.” Through the Showcase, Google wishes to provide readers with greater context and publishers with high-value traffic.
