DoubleVerify’s 2020 Global Insights Report highlights a sharp rise in CTV Fraud.

While connected TV has grown as the fastest growing digital media channel, it has also become a fertile ground for fraud. The study identified 1300 fraudulent TV apps since 2019, with 60% of them not detected until 2020.

There was also a 161% increase in fraudulent CTV traffic rates in the first quarter of 2020 as opposed to Q1 2019. Though bot fraud accounted for 26% of fraud incidents overall, it was responsible for 78% of fraud incidents on CTV. DoubleVerify also found that CTV frauds affect both programmatic and direct buying channels.

DoubleVerify’s CEO, Mark Zagorski, said “Fraud follows ad spend — especially within emerging channels like CTV...” This growth is expected to lead to the development of new performance metrics that can build up buyer confidence.
