A McKinsey & Co. study states that the purchase of groceries online has risen between 8 to 10% since COVID-19.
20% of Americans have moved on from their primary grocery stores to new retailers, due to issues retailers are facing keeping shelves well stocked, and better ecommerce offerings at other stores. Other factors include a store's proximity to work or home.
Of those who switched, 37% said they would remain loyal to the new store even after the crisis ends. Online purchases of groceries have improved 8-10% among consumers and are expected to remain higher than before the lockdown, even after restrictions are relaxed.
McKinsey & Co’s Steven Begley highlights the need for grocers to “double down” on building ecommerce capabilities. He stresses the need for retailers to be transparent about product inventory to build customer loyalty.
