The new labels would be similar to the ones that Twitter launched to identify synthetic and manipulated media.
California-based Twitter announced that it will add labels and warning messages on tweets that convey misleading information regarding COVID-19. The new labels will also provide links to a Twitter-curated page or external trusted sources containing more authentic information.
The social media giant said the warning labels will also apply to the tweets that have been sent before this announcement. The platform will use internal systems to monitor tweets related to COVID-19. It would also rely on “trusted partners” like non-governmental organisations to identify potentially harmful content.
Twitter will not take any actions against the tweets with information that was unconfirmed at the time of sharing. But the microblogging platform will place labels on the tweets that have been claimed as disputed or confirmed as false.
