Fear of restrictions and self-isolation made Britons rush to the supermarkets.
Britons have spent a total of £10.2 billion on groceries over the past four weeks, an increase of £1.3 billion over March last year, according to data from IRI. In lead up to lockdown in the UK, consumer weekly spends reached almost the same levels as last Christmas.
Sales peaked in the week ending 21st March 2020 with volumes up 40% reaching £3.1 billion (2019 Christmas spend was £3.2 billion). But, with social distancing and stocked up cupboards, sales have plummeted to £2.1 billion as compared to £2.4 billion in the same week last year.
Fuelled by self-isolation and illness fears, sub-categories like personal wash, vitamins, household cleaning products and non-pharmacy medicines saw a spike in demand. A Nielsen study also found an 84% rise in the spend on frozen foods.
