Users can share their location information with selected Messenger contacts.

This article states that Facebook is currently in the early stages of testing an “Auto Status” feature for Messenger. However, there doesn’t seem to be a plan for the external rollout of this yet. The feature will leverage location and weather information off a user’s device to provide a visual representation of their activities at any given time.

Users can use the “Auto Status” to keep their close connections updated about their location, without having to call or message them. Visuals will appear on top of users’ profile images in the app.

The Auto Status doesn’t share specific location details, however, it displays location types like “at a café”. The addition of this feature on Messenger could be an indicator of its integration into Instagram’s main app and WhatsApp as well.
