Harsh reviews can negatively affect average ratings of local businesses.

Crowd-sourced review forum, Yelp has updated its review guidelines to protect local businesses from reputational harm from negative reviews during the coronavirus outbreak. The business directory service has implemented a zero-tolerance policy for claims made in reviews against the businesses due to extraordinary circumstances.

Search engine giant Google also has disabled reviews and review responses on Google My Business accounts to protect business ratings. In a recently published article, Google has clarified that “New reviews, review replies, and new Q&A” will be disabled during the emergency period.

Both Google and Yelp have further decided to ensure that users have the functional capabilities to reflect updated business information. Yelp has also introduced new free tools and features for businesses to help them keep their consumers updated with the latest information.
