Coronavirus outbreak fears have led to officials considering postponing the international event.

This year’s Olympics can be delayed by one to two years if the situation around coronavirus pandemic doesn’t improve according to an organising committee executive of Tokyo 2020 Olympics.  The games are the latest of large-scale global events that have been or might be postponed.

The official also told the Wall Street Journal they were considering a full cancellation or hosting the event via broadcast and without spectators at the venues. But the financial implications of these options were “not attractive” as postponing the event.

Though postponing would be financially favourable, it would hit broadcasters and media-right owners with the revenue from sponsors being shifted to later dates or cancelled. But there has been no official word and event is slated to begin on 24th July as planned.
