This has improved the share prices of game and app developers in China.

A report by the Financial Times which cited App Annie data found over 222 million apps and games have been downloaded in China from Apple’s App Store since 2 February. Since Coronavirus’ outbreak, Chinese residents have been forced indoors and this driven the increased downloads.  

Average weekly app downloads during the first two weeks of February grew by 40%, greater than the average for the whole of 2019. While mobile games were the most downloaded, apps related to education, entertainment, business and photo/video were in demand too.

However, a similar spike in downloads wasn’t observed in Japan or South Korea despite the outbreak being there as well. Education related apps have seen twice the average download rate for all of 2019, in February.
