Scape is working towards building infrastructure for “spatial-computing devices”, like wearables and autonomous vehicles.
Facebook has acquired Scape Technologies, an augmented reality (AR) start-up. The article quotes TechCrunch which has estimated the purchase price to be about $40 million. Scape Technologies’ expertise lies in creating 1:1 digital representations of the physical world.
Scape’s aims to enable any physical location or place capable of displaying AR content. The objective of using Scape’s tech is to “triangulate user location anywhere in the world within centimeters”.
Commenting on the acquisition the author states that Facebook could use Scape’s capabilities to build more AR experiences. It could also allow the social media platform to create new mapping and local search applications.
